Coinbase Introduced Prediction Markets and Stock Trading in Its Biggest Update

Coinbase has just taken a major step in its journey to become a financial super app. Last Wednesday, the digital asset exchange announced a series of new products, repositioning Coinbase as an all-in-one financial app.

Beyond crypto, Coinbase now supports a wider range of investment services. The app offers stock markets, advanced trading, and prediction markets.

After months of development, the following products are now ready to launch on Coinbase.

Stock Trading

Now, Coinbase offers not only crypto trading but also stock trading. With this integration, users can manage their portfolios more easily. Coinbase users can buy, sell, and manage their stock, ETF (exchange-traded fund), and crypto portfolios without having to hop between multiple exchanges.

Not only that, but traders are no longer limited by traditional stock market operating hours. Now, they can trade 24 hours a day, 5 days a week.

As of right now, there is no list of stocks that will be available. However, Coinbase's Head of Consumer and Business Products, Max Branzburg, said that the app will offer hundreds of top stocks based on market capitalization, trading volume, and other metrics.

Coinbase plans to add thousands of stocks and ETFs in the coming months. Early next year, it plans to expand this feature to enable traders outside the United States to efficiently access US stocks through the app.

Prediction Markets

A prediction market is a market where investors can bet on activities or events with unknown outcomes. The activities typically revolve around politics and the economy, such as election results, a company's annual revenue, or the exchange rate of a crypto asset.

This year, prediction markets have rapidly grown in popularity. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong believes that their appeal lies not only in trading, but also in the insights they provide into market sentiment and people's opinions on a given topic

“If you look at things like economic indicators … or elections, people are using prediction markets to try to figure out what is going to happen next month,” explained Armstrong to CNBC. “Maybe1% of people use it as an asset class to trade, and 99% of people are using it as a way to figure out what’s going to happen—almost like a competitor to traditional media or maybe even entertainment.”

Coinbase is now bringing prediction markets into its own ecosystem through a partnership with Kalshi, a regulated exchange and prediction market.

Real-World Asset (RWA) Tokenization

Coinbase launched Coinbase Tokenize to support the tokenization of real-world assets.

According to Armstrong, this expansion is a bridge to something bigger.

Stock trading is a strong first step, but the real goal is equity tokenization. If Coinbase successfully launches equity tokenization, the platform could democratize access for everyone and create new market structures in the United States.

Coinbase Business

For businesses and developers, Coinbase is expanding its features beyond retail trading. The Coinbase Business feature is available to eligible users in the United States and Singapore. This feature will be equipped with an API extension that includes custody, payments, trading, and stablecoins.

Custom Stablecoins

Finally, Coinbase offers custom stablecoins for companies that want stablecoins with their own brand. That way, a company's brand can be at the front and center of attention in every transaction.

Conclusion

The latest Coinbase update brings a variety of new features, such as stock trading, prediction markets, and tokenization of real-world assets. This demonstrates Coinbase's commitment to becoming an all-in-one financial app amid competition with similar platforms, such as Robinhood and Kraken.
